日本語版 イタリヤの旅の想い出をあなたに
During the first part of
my spring break, I traveled to Italy - Rome and
Florence - with my mother. I
had been looking forward to this trip for a
long time, especially because I
had studied the Greeks, the Romans, and the
Renaissance at school this year.
I wanted to see the ruins and paintings
that I had studied and saw in videos.
I was also very keen to go because
although I had been to Italy before, I do
not remember most of the things I
saw or did. Thus, this time, I was ready to
fill my brain with loads of
memories.
First we ventured through Rome - a city of antiquity. At the Vatican Museum
I was awe-stricken by the beauty
of the paintings in the Sistine Chapel,
which were done by Michelangelo
Buonarroti. My mother and I stayed in the
chapel for a very long time,
admiring the frescoes done with Michelangelo's
amazing artistic abilities. My
mother told me that the frescoes were much
more clean, and the scenes were
visible compared to the last time she came.
This was because restoration work
had been done, and so I understood the
significance of the restoration work.
I think we should appreciate the works
of people who prevent the paintings
from fading or getting damaged. In the
Vatican Museum, we also saw the works
of other artists of the Renaissance,
such as Raphael. I truly believe that
the Renaissance was a great age in
which art flourished.
In Rome, we
also saw attractions such as the Colosseum, the Foro Romano
(ruins of
buildings that were once the political center of the Romans), and
the baths
of Caracalla which were used by the Romans. It was exciting to go
inside the
Colosseum, and stand in the center of the arena where battles
were fought
more than a thousand years ago. It must have been extremely
scary being
there, surrounded by about 50 thousand people (the Colosseum has
80 entrances
and 160 pathways so it is very big). I don't think the events
that took place
in the Colosseum are morally correct, because many people
were killed and
blood was shed - both humans and animals - for enjoyment.
Yet standing there
at the Colosseum where Romans were, was a very exciting
experience.
I
really enjoyed Rome, especially because it had so many things that had
been
preserved from a long time ago. I was sort of able to feel what it was
like
when Romans were alive, or appreciate the skills of the people during
the
Renaissance.
After Rome, we went to Florence where we saw many more
wonderful products of
the past ages. We saw sculptures by Michelangelo such
as 'David', and the
four sculptures made for the Medici family (Dusk, Dawn,
Night, Day). As I
learnt more about Michelangelo and saw his works, I began
to admire him
increasingly. He painted, he sculpted, he was an engineer... It
is amazing
to think that one person can excel in many different
subjects.
Other people who I think are very talented include Botticelli,
Leonardo da
Vinci, and Tiziano. I was able to see the works of these painters
at
Florence, in the Uffizi Art Gallery. I had studied many of their works
at
school, so I was very happy to see the real paintings.
There are
too many great memories I made in Italy, that if I keep on
writing, I could
go on for ages. Thus I will stop with just a few more
little
comments...
I enjoyed my trip to Rome and Florence tremendously because
there were so
many great things to see, the weather was great(it was sunny
every day), and
the food was delicious (with exceptions). Yet in the end, I
did get a little
tired, and I was ready to go back home.

Memories From Me To You
Troubles with the Airplanes
On the way
back...
We had to fly from Florence to Milan, and then Milan to
London.
This was supposed to be our schedule:
Friday 18th April, 18:20 -
airplane leaves Florence for Milan
20:40 - airplane
leaves Milan for London
Arrive in London at 21:40
and go home!!
However, there were problems, and we were told that we had
to stay the night
in Italy. So this became our new schedule:
Friday 18th
April, about 18:50 airplane leaves Florence for Milan
Arrive
at airport in Milan (20:00?).
Wait in the airport until
around 22:00 for a bus to take us
to a hotel.
Arrive at
hotel at around 22:50.
Eat dinner...
Sleep at around 12:30.
Morning call at
6:00.
Breakfast from 6:30.
Leave hotel
at 7:00.
Arrive at airport (Milan) at about
7:50.
Our plane was supposed to leave at 10:15, but it left
after
11:00.
We arrived in London...
It was a very
interesting experience. It was tiring, but we got back safely,
and that's
more important than anything else.
On the way to Italy...
We had a
better trip on the way to Italy, although it was very interesting
as
well...
We were supposed to go on the 10:15 plane from London to Rome. Yet
because
of overbooking, we were not allowed to get on board. Instead, we were
given
business seats on the next flight to Rome, and we were given
some
compensation. We had to wait for about three to four hours, so the
business
lounge was very good (there were seats, food, drinks, magazines,
and
newspapers). The flight was not delayed, so we got to Rome safely, and
it
was still light outside so we were happy. We weren't angry,
especially
because they did treat us well, and we got some pocket money for
the
journey. Yet the incident was very interesting, and we pondered about
the
hardship of airline companies. We also wondered if these sort of
troubles
are common, because we had never really experienced troubles like
these
before...
