はアイルランドの古くからある祝福の言葉（Traditional　Ｉｒｉｓｈ　Ｂｌｅｓｓｉｎｇ ）で、多少バリエイションがあるようですが、次のようなものがポピﾗｰなようです。

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again, May God hold
you in the hollow of his hand

（拙訳）
あなたの行く手に道が開かれますように！
いつも追い風が吹きますように！
日はあなたの顔を暖かく照らし
あなたの行く所、雨はいつも優しく降りますように！
また会う日まで　神の御手に抱かれていますように！

昔、人々が徒歩で旅した頃、旅人へ贈る言葉として、郷愁を誘います。

同じような祝福の言葉に、こんなのもあります。

これも見知らぬ土地を徒歩で旅する者には、切実に訴えてくるものがあり、アイルランドを歩くとこの感じがよく分ります。
美しい景色、よい天気、暖かい人情ーーこの世が天国に思える時です。

その年の暮れ、マリアンさんがこんな言葉を送ってくださいました。。

人生のあらゆる苦労はどうか背中のランドセルに入る程度のものでありますように！ということなのでしょうか？
実は私にはこの文が良く分からないのです。thereはtheirの誤りのように思えますが、つまり

May All our troubles in Life be ones that wear school bags on thier back's.

この格言の意味について、イギリス人のフィリップさんのたずねましたら、次のように解説してくださいました。和訳して紹介します。
「引用のアイルランドの格言は素晴らしいもので、日本人なら容易に想像できます。背中にランドセルを背負っているのは誰でしょう？勿論、子供たちです。
私は、日本へはじめて来た時、小学校の生徒がすべてランドセルを背負って学校へ行き、そのランドセルはその学校の特有なものだという事実に驚きました。
ですから、この格言の意味は次のとおりです。
あなたのこの世で経験するトラブルは、あなたの子供から来るトラブルだけでありますように！それ以上に厳しいものでないように！
　子供は祝福と見なされます。したがって、子供達がどんなトラブルをひき起こそうとそのトラブルに耐えることを我々は厭いません。
この格言はまた次の意味も持ちます。
どうかあなたに子供を授かりますように！」
（原文）The Irish saying you quote below is a nice one, and very easy to imagine if you are Japanese.
Who wears school bags on their backs? Children, of course! When I first came to Japan,
I was struck by the fact that every primary-school child went to school with their school bag
on their back, and each school had its own special bag.
So the meaning of the saying is: May the only troubles that you experience in life be the everyday
troubles that come from your children, and nothing more serious. Children are seen as a blessing,
so whatever troubles they may cause are those we do not mind bearing. Thus the saying also has a second
meaning: May you have children.

徒歩旅行を終えて、ダブリン滞在中、冒頭の６行の言葉を書いた絵皿を、ダブリン城の地下の土産物店で見つけました。
長男夫婦の土産にと買ったことでした。
